As UCC’s sexiest student publication (yes, we’re claiming that title thanks to the UCC Confessions poll in November 2020), we get lots of questions about our submissions procedure: how it works, what we’re looking for and all the rest.

Do I have to have writing experience to write for Motley?

Not at all! This is a space for you to develop your writing, we welcome people of all skill levels and will work with you to give a platform.

How long are articles meant to be?

Aim for 650 words if at all possible. If you want to write a longer piece, get in touch with our editors via their emails and they can talk to you about that.

How do I submit an article?
Send an article idea or an article to one of our editors (if you’re unsure of the section you want to submit to, just shoot off an email to editor@motley.ie). If you can, please send the articles via Google Docs (included in your student GSuite), double-spaced (our eyes be struggling fam) and in a font that isn’t comic sans.

When are submission deadlines?

We publish in two formats: digital (on our website) and print.

For digital publishing, we’re open all year (including the summer-time) for submissions if you are so inclined.

If you want to be featured in our monthly print magazine, keep an eye out for the specific deadline. You can contact any of our editors to find out about our deadline dates and if there’s a theme for that month.

What style of writing does Motley accept?

As our name suggests, we accept an eclectic range of writing styles, tones, themes and interests. We have five sections; Current Affairs, Features & Opinion, Entertainment, Fashion and Wellness, so there’s lots of room for you to explore what you want to write about.

Do I need to reference if I’m referring to a certain source?

While we appreciate the enthusiasm, generally no. If you want to reference a certain website, you can highlight the text and add a hyperlink to it. If you feel referencing is important to your piece, talk to our editors and they’ll help guide you in the direction you want to take your article.

What political leniency is Motley?

We try our best at Motley to cater to the interests of all students, regardless of their political views. We encourage people from anywhere on the political spectrum to put pen to paper and write us a piece.

I want to publish anonymously, does Motley facilitate that?
Yes. Get in touch with one of our editors and they’ll work with you and maintain your privacy.

Is there anything Motley won’t accept?
Motley will not publish hate-speech. This can include but is not limited to racist, sexist, misogynistic, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic, and sectarian writing. Just be sound.
